Long-term unemployment has a strong effect on individuals and families. It also profoundly impacts the economic performance of countries, including a reduction in productivity resulting from a loss of skills. In the fifth year of the crisis, long-term unemployment is becoming an increasing problem in many countries and the risk of labour market exclusion is growing. One of the consequences of that exclusion is that when the economic recovery comes, the long-term unemployed will find it difficult to obtain employment due to their long absence from the labour market. Putting in place integrated policy responses to address long-term unemployment and the social and economic consequences of it, and to plan for more and better quality jobs in the future, such as by better aligning of employment, skills and economic development policies, is therefore crucial and cannot be left until the recovery takes full effect.

This conference will discuss key factors of successfully tackling long-term unemployment. International Organizations, economic experts and public employment services from the USA, the Americas, as well as Asia-Pacific and Europe and employer representatives will exchange good practices on identifying long-term unemployed clients, how to activate their work-readiness and skills and how to match them with employer needs. The conference will also look at early interventions to prevent long-term unemployment and at strategies to retain clients in work.
